Statham plays Cole Reed, a former Special Forces operative who is now working in private security. His billionaire boss is murdered and Cole is quickly made the prime suspect. He knows he has been framed and sets out to find the people responsible. His search eventually takes him to a massive ship, where he discovers that the murder is connected to a much bigger conspiracy.

The story is familiar, and the film doesn't really try to reinvent the action genre. There is a lot of chasing, fighting and shooting, with Statham moving from one dangerous situation to another.

The action is definitely the film's biggest strength. Statham is very much in his comfort zone here. The fights are powerful and there are some good action sequences that should keep his fans happy. Annabelle Wallis also gets her share of action and has some good moments alongside Statham.

But beyond the action, there isn't enough substance. The characters aren't explored deeply enough and the larger conspiracy doesn't have the impact it could have had. Just when you expect the story to slow down and give you something more to hold on to, it moves on to the next chase or fight.

And this is where I kept thinking about the Bourne films. Jason Statham has created his own action-star image, but the Bourne movies had much more going for them than just great action. There was mystery, tension, a strong central character and a story that kept making you want to know what happens next. Mutiny doesn't quite get there.

Having said that, the film is not boring. It moves quickly, doesn't waste too much time and delivers enough action to make it an entertaining watch. If you're going in simply to watch Jason Statham kick some serious ass, you won't be disappointed.

But if you're looking for an action thriller with a strong story and characters that stay with you, Mutiny doesn't quite make that impact. For me, it's a decent, entertaining action film, but nothing we haven't seen before from Jason Statham.
