Mirzapur The Movie

Pankaj Tripathi · Ali Fazal · Divyenndu · Jitendra Kumar

4/5By Rohit Khilnani

A world audiences already love gets the scale of a theatrical film without losing what made the series work in the first place.

Once you watch Mirzapur The Movie on the big screen, you realise this was always meant to be a theatrical experience. We have enjoyed Mirzapur on OTT, but watching these characters and this world unfold on a big screen gives the story a completely different impact. It transports you right back into their world.

It also makes you realise that writing is where the real magic lies. Puneet Krishna’s writing and Gurmeet Singh’s direction are once again a winning combination. They take the same characters, put them in familiar situations and yet manage to make this feel like another chapter in their lives. The film fits somewhere in the timeline of what we have already seen in the series and works almost like another, very big episode of Mirzapur.

The best part is that the story isn't unnecessarily complicated. Kaleen Bhaiya continues to run his empire, but he needs money to keep the political machinery around him running. To make that happen, he may have to step outside Mirzapur and take risks that come with expanding his reach.

Guddu and Bablu remain the two people Kaleen Bhaiya trusts, while Munna continues to be as brash and reckless as ever. Some of the face-offs between Guddu and Munna are among the film's best moments, particularly because you already know the history and baggage these characters carry.

And yes, Sweety is back, and Shriya Pilgaonkar is as energetic and charming as ever. Rasika Dugal as Beena, Sonal Chauhan as Mumtaaz, Harshita Gaur as Dimpy, Sheeba Chaddha, Sushant Singh and Ravi Kishan all have significant parts to play. Sheeba Chaddha definitely makes a mark, and so does Anangsha Biswas as Zarina. What works beautifully is that almost every character gets their moment.

At 3 hours and 17 minutes, Mirzapur The Movie is certainly long. But surprisingly, the runtime doesn't become a major issue because the storytelling keeps moving. The production design and background score add enormously to the theatrical experience.

And this isn't a film where one person dominates everything. The ensemble is the star. Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu and Jitendra Kumar all shine, and naturally, all eyes are on these familiar faces whenever they appear on screen.

There are also two post-credit scenes, so don't rush out when the credits begin.

Mirzapur The Movie takes a world audiences already love and gives it the scale of a theatrical film without losing what made the series work in the first place.

I’m giving it 4 stars out of 5. I recommend you go and watch Mirzapur The Movie on the big screen.
